Not liking this swell drought we are enduring for most of this winter. I can't remember a worst one. And not helpful are forecasts skewed to over-hyped like the one for yesterday. Having read that a longer period larger swell would hit about lunch time I headed out on my usual walk with my gear strapped to my back thinking better to have than not. Paid off as North Curl Curl was delivering consistent pockets of opportunity leveraged nicely by Livo and some CUBAns out for their monthly comp.

Things were certainly dialled up this morning as the swell gained significantly in size and hit us from the east. Normally, this direction holds little promise but that changed with the bigger size. And it was impressive to watch when the set waves hit the point. Wave of the day goes to @sakiko_sj  who took on a monster the third in in a huge set of six that rolled through just before I finished shooting this morning.

Another glorious winter's day with plenty of sunshine, warm temps and waves. The Point was delivering some decent set waves but most of the action was out on the Bommies, populated by seriously stoked foilers, longboarders and a couple of kayakers. Seven years ago today: This once in a generation swell was the primeval spawn of an east coast low that raged mercilessly for 24 hours over the first weekend of June 2016. East Coast Lows are common along the Sydney coast but in this case the distinction was its north easterly direction and ferocity which caused severe flooding at Narrabeen and extreme beach erosion at Collaroy where several homes were seriously damaged including the infamous loss of a backyard swimming pool. 

Emerging from all this destruction and carnage was an unprecedented swell event delivering huge sphincter-tightening waves with a size and scale never witnessed before on the Northern Beaches.

Opted for some northern exposure Monday morning where I found @thewaxhead (pictured) putting on a bit of a clinic. I'm not sure if it was formal or not but a clinic it was nonetheless. It was a privilege to watch and photograph a legend taking on the large tricky conditions so easily. Yes, lots of rides ended up closing out but hey you gotta ride 'em to find 'em. And kudos to the other four riders out there, each being rewarded for their tenacity and courage tackling those conditions.

Conditions scaled back two metres overnight after yesterday's mutant swell leaving us a paltry four metres to surf in this morning. Quite an eager crew out on the Point this morning under beautiful sunny conditions, warmer air temps and a gentler offshore breeze.

The forecasts were spot on today with swell ranging in excess of 6 metres (!) with lots of purple colour-coding on the charts for emphasis. Wind was a bit rough on exposed breaks like Narrabeen but relatively calm and tranquil around the corner at Warriewood where a crew of exactly four had the place to themselves.

A nice morning for surfing and flying greeted us today including a noticeable uptick in swell size and period all helped along by a slight offshore breeze. 

I haven't flown the drone for awhile so it was good to get my hours up and fine-tune angles, heights and proximity to the crew surfing out there plus other air traffic like @skymonkey5 . 😁

Hope you caught a few yourselves.

And what's up with the camera carrying pigeon I hear you ask? I read on The New Yorker today of all days that some guy back in 1917 who was both a pigeon and photography enthusiast, decided to bring them together to take aerial photos apparently for the first time ever in history.
